My name is Gordon, and we return to the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 23, as Jesus is crucified:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><sup>26<\/sup><\/strong>As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. <strong><sup>27<\/sup><\/strong>A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. <strong><sup>28<\/sup><\/strong>Jesus turned and said to them, \u2018Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. <strong><sup>29<\/sup><\/strong>For the time will come when you will say, \u201cBlessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!\u201d <strong><sup>30<\/sup><\/strong>Then<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2006\u201cthey will say to the mountains, \u2018Fall on us!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>and to the hills, \u2018Cover us!\u2019\u2006\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>31<\/sup><\/strong>For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>32<\/sup><\/strong>Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. <strong><sup>33<\/sup><\/strong>When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals \u2013 one on his right, the other on his left. <strong><sup>34<\/sup><\/strong>Jesus said, \u2018Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.\u2019 And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>35<\/sup><\/strong>The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, \u2018He saved others; let him save himself if he is God\u2019s Messiah, the Chosen One.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>36<\/sup><\/strong>The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar <strong><sup>37<\/sup><\/strong>and said, \u2018If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>38<\/sup><\/strong>There was a written notice above him, which read:<\/p>\n<p>This is the king of the Jews.<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>39<\/sup><\/strong>One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: \u2018Aren\u2019t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>40<\/sup><\/strong>But the other criminal rebuked him. \u2018Don\u2019t you fear God,\u2019 he said, \u2018since you are under the same sentence? <strong><sup>41<\/sup><\/strong>We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>42<\/sup><\/strong>Then he said, \u2018Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>43<\/sup><\/strong>Jesus answered him, \u2018Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Take a moment, and reflect: We have all sinned. It was our sin that held Jesus to the cross. Because of our sin, Jesus gave his life as a willing sacrifice so that we may have forgiveness and eternal life.
